Fresh waters
Salmon
- The Kodiak coho (“silver”) salmon fishery will continue through early October; more than 8,000 silvers are projected to be in Buskin River by the end of the run.
Trout, Dolly Varden, Grayling
- Dolly Varden fishing along the road system and elsewhere will continue at least through early November. Between now and then, Dollies will complete their spawning cycle and begin migrating to fresh water overwintering locations. Buskin Lake is always a good bet for catching Dollies during mild winters and early each spring.
Lake Fishing
- Autumn is an excellent period to fish rainbow trout in the stocked lakes along the Kodiak road system. As surface water temperatures cool, rainbows will move to deep areas to temporarily find warmer water. Spinners and leech imitations are often effective to catch these deepwater denizens.
Salt waters
Halibut
- Halibut fishing should remain productive in various locations throughout Chiniak Bay into late October, after which these fish will start to move offshore into deep waters where they’ll spawn and spend the winter.
Salmon
- Trolling for Kodiak king salmon can remain productive throughout the winter, with many locations that produce results in summer also being good bets during colder weather.
Other salt water fishing
- Black rockfish can be caught near-shore until late in the year at depths of 10 fathoms or less. Look for them along kelp beds, rock pinnacles, and other natural or manmade structures.
- The Kodiak lingcod season is open through the end of the year.
