Although most anglers quit fishing at the end of the fall coho run there are still opportunities for winter fishing on Prince of Wales Island. A few of the larger island streams contain fall run steelhead and as long as the streams are not frozen over these fish can be caught throughout the winter, as they do not spawn until spring. Local anglers usually start getting serious about fall run steelhead after the Thanksgiving Day holiday. Two of the better fall run steelhead streams on the island are the Klawock and Thorne Rivers. Also most large, low elevation island lakes can be ice-free so there is an opportunity to fish for Dolly Varden, cutthroat and rainbow trout. Anglers looking for trout fishing on Prince of Wales Island in the winter should consider Klawock Lake, as it contains good populations of trout, is usually ice free, and has easy access in the winter. Salt water anglers have a chance of hooking a winter king salmon if weather conditions allow them to get out on the water.

Anglers are reminded to check ADF&G 's main web page for in-season regulation changes. Inquires about in-season changes can also be addressed by calling the POW office at (907) 826-2498 or dropping by the office in Craig.
