CHIGNIK RIVER KING SALMON BAG LIMIT INCREASED AND FISHING SEASON EXTENDED ON JULY 2

A strong return of king salmon to the Chignik River is allowing the Department of Fish and Game to increase the bag and possession for king salmon 20 inches or longer to 5 per day and 5 in possession as of July 2. The annual limit of 5 king salmon remains in effect. In addition, the spawning season closure is being rescinded. Fishing for king salmon in the Chignik River drainage will be allowed for the remainder of the year.

The biological escapement goal for king salmon in the Chignik River drainage is 1,300 to 2,700 spawning fish.  The weir count as of June 29 was 909 king salmon and the return is estimated to be less than 10% complete. Using recent run timing data, it is possible to project that the final weir count will exceed 7,000 fish, well above the upper end of the escapement goal range.

The 5 fish annual limit regulation cannot be increased by emergency order and will remain in effect.  King salmon less than 20 inches in length caught in fresh water do not count towards the 5 fish annual limit.
