June 24, 2005
Effective 6:00 a.m., Saturday, June 25, the daily bag limit in the Russian River/Kenai River fly-fishing-only area will increase to four (4) salmon and the possession limit will increase to eight (8) salmon.
This bag and possession increase will expire at 11:59 p.m., Thursday, July 14. After this time, the bag limit goes back to 3 per day/3 in possession.
Silver salmon have special limits in this area, so please check regulations before going fishing here.
The Russian River/Kenai River fly-fishing-only area is described on page 31 of the “2005 Southcentral Alaska Sport Fishing Regulation Summary.”
The Alaska Board of Fisheries has authorized the Department of Fish and Game to increase the bag and possession limit when it can be projected that the upper end of the Russian River early-run sockeye salmon spawning escapement goal of 37,000 fish will be exceeded. The escapement has exceeded 31,983 fish and it is now projected that more than 37,000 early run sockeye salmon will reach the spawning grounds. It is therefore appropriate to increase harvest limits to permit anglers the additional opportunity to harvest Russian River sockeye salmon.
All other regulations for this fishery remain in effect, including the use of only one single-hook fly with hook gap no larger than 3/8-inch. Anglers may possess only the limit allowed for the waters they are fishing. If the possession limit is eight fish, and anglers are fishing where the limit is only three fish, they are over the possession limit, and subject to citations and fines.
