ADF&G LIBERALIZES SOUTHEAST ALASKA KING SALMON SPORT FISHING REGULATIONS FOR 2005

Juneau – The Alaska Department of Fish and Game today announced that king salmon sport fishing regulations in Southeast Alaska are being liberalized to provide additional harvest opportunities for king salmon.  The new regulations are as follows:

  • Alaska residents: bag and possession limit of three king salmon 28 inches or greater in length; no annual limit.
  • Nonresidents: bag and possession limit of one king salmon 28 inches or greater in length; annual limit of five fish.

“Thanks to effective international cooperation in managing shared fishery resources, sport fishermen in Southeast Alaska have an opportunity to catch more fish this summer,” said Governor Frank H. Murkowski.  "Fishing has always been a family affair in our household – and I hope that sport fishermen use this expanded opportunity to enjoy Alaska's bounty and spend time fishing with friends and family this summer.”

These regulations will be in effect May 3, 2005 and will remain in effect through August 30, 2005.  These regulations apply in all marine waters of Southeast Alaska except in District 11, Sections 11-A and 11-B (near Juneau) from May 3, 2005 through June 30, and in District 8 (near Petersburg and Wrangell) through July 15.  These regulations do not supersede special regulations already in effect near Juneau, Petersburg, and Wrangell.  The nonresident annual limit of five fish also applies in all freshwaters between Cape Suckling and Cape Fairweather.

The new regulations, which are more liberal than those specified in the Southeast Alaska King Salmon Management Plan, are intended to provide additional harvest opportunity in the sport fishery during 2005 in order to harvest the allocation adopted by the Board of Fisheries.
